Caroni 1997 A.D. Rattray 18 Year Old

Established in 1923 on the site of the sugar factory for which it was named, Caroni was a key ingredient of British Navy rations, where it's famous high ester 'Heavy' rums help to make up the signature flavour. Sadly, with the decline of the Trinidadian sugar industry, the Islands distillers became more and more dependent upon imported molasses, making distilling less and less economical. The writing then, was already on the wall when in 2001 the Trinidadian government sold a 49% share in the holding company to Angostura. Caroni was shuttered in 2002 and a behemoth of flavour was lost to the world.

An A.D. Rattray bottling of Caroni, distilled in 1997 and bottled 18 years later. This was bottled from part of bourbon barrel #867 on 30th June 2015, which produced 237 bottles.

Re-established in 2002, the A.D. Rattray company is headed up by Stanley Walker Morrison, grandson of the Stanley P. Morrison who owned Bowmore distillery. The A.D. Rattray company came into the family through the marriage of Stanley to the daughter of William Walker, who's William Walker & Co had acquired the firm in 1920. When Beam Suntory acquired full ownership of the Morrison Bowmore in 1994, the family revived the A.D. Rattray name in order to find a new avenue back into the whisky trade. This is part of their Cask Collection range, which was launched in 2004.
