Bologne 2014 Velier 7 Year Old Flora Antillarum
Velier was founded by Casimir Chaix in Genoa in 1947 as a wine and spirits importer and distributor. By the 1980s they were still a small family-company with less than ten staff. This all changed in 1986 when it was purchased by Luca Gargano, a former brand ambassador for Saint James who was at the time still in his twenties. Under his direction, they selected their first single cask whiskies in 1992, and their first rum in 1996. In the decades that followed, Velier have gone on to become one of the most collectible brands in the industry, and Gargano has positioned them as the one of the foremost authorities and bottlers of rum anywhere in the world.
This is Bologne rhum vieux one of a trio of Guadeloupe rums from the 2022 series, Flora Antillarum.
The Bologne distillery is the oldest in Guadeloupe, tracing its origins back to the Bologne family, sugar farming Dutch colonists displaced from Brazil after Portugal and Spain declared war on their community in the mid-17th century. The protestant family was denied entry to the French catholic stronghold of Martinique, eventually landing in Guadeloupe. The estate is in Basse-Terre, and has always had a distillery, however the production of white rum agricole only took precedence in the late 19th century when sugar production was becoming less profitable. Bologne was bought by Louis Sargenton-Callard in 1930, and it remains in his family to this day. The rum is distilled on two copper column stills between the months of November and August, and is unique in that it is distilled only to around 55-60% ABV, allowing more of the natural cane flavour to be present in the spirit. The distillery began laying down casks to produce aged rum for the first time in 2008, following the installation of Frederic David as cellar manager.
This is a blend of three casks:
One of 1000 bottles.
