Ebb-Tide Fine Old Jamaica Rum 1940s

This was bottled in the 1940s and will likely have been distilled in the late 1930s.
J&G Stewart were established in 1779 as a rum importer in Edinburgh, eventually branching out into the Scotch blending business. Their Stewart's blend gained them a firm foothold in a number of European markets, as well as a strong presence in pre-Prohibition America. The latter may have been the catalyst for the company's takeover by DCL in 1917. J&G Stewart had struggled financially in the early 20th century, and with Prohibition on the horizon, their procurement by DCL (which included around 800 casks) was one of the biggest deals in whisky history at the time. Once again the blend thrived, and the company is now a subsidiary of Whyte & Mackay after the anti-monopoly laws forced the newly formed United Distillers to divest some of its whisky interests in 1986.
