Fairfield & Mount Gay Company was a business established in 1918 by Aubrey Fitzosbert Ward in order to manage his extensive sugar estate holdings on Barbados. He had acquired the first of these, Fairfield, in 1908, and added Mount Gay along with its distillery in Saint Lucy in 1918.
Despite owning the distillery, a law in Barbados at the time forbade it from selling rum directly to consumers, so the Mount Gay brand was owned by another company called Mount Gay Distilleries. Following the decline of the Barbados sugar industry, Fairfield & Mount Gay Company was carved up by the Ward family in 1975 and the sugar estates were placed in control of Fairfield Investments Ltd, and the distilling operation was managed by Rum Refinery of Mount Gay Ltd.
