Tate & Lyle PLC is a global supplier of food and beverage ingredients to industrial markets. It was established in 1921 through the merger of Henry Tate & Sons and Abram Lyle & Sons. Both prior entities were sugar refiners and this was also Tate & Lyle's primary business until began to diversify in the later 20th century, eventually divesting entirely from sugar in 2010.
In the mid-20th century the company had a huge influence in the Caribbean and owned sugar estates in Jamaica, Trinidad and Guyana. Its acquisitions began in 1937 when it established the West Indies Sugar Company and one of its most notable subsidiaries was Caroni Ltd, which it originally formed in partnership with United Molasses Company.
