Macardo is a craft spirits distillery located in Strohwilen in northern Switzerland. Established in 2007 by Marco Frauchiger and Bernardo Lamberti, the distillery was built within the site of a former cheese factory, first built back in 1904. Today the operation is owned by Andreas and Martina Bössow who acquired it in 2015, modernising it significantly four years later by opening Macardo World. Situated on the same site, it included a new distillery, bar, hotel, restaurant and event space.
The distillery produces a range of different spirit types, the first of which was a bourbon-style whisky. Its first rum was released in 2018 and, like its other spirits, is produced on a pair of wood-fired 150- and 200-litre pot stills.
The distillery's spirits are all marketed under the single Macardo brand name, however are all presented slightly differently. Its debut and flagship spirit is a bourbon-style whisky that it now refers to as Swiss Thurbon (a portmanteau of Thurgau and Bourbon).
The first rum was released in 2018 and is known as Señor Rum. It is a blend of two single varietal rums, one distilled using Indian molasses and the other using molasses from Nicaragua, both of which are aged in used whisky barrels. The Macardo brand portfolio also includes gin, vodka and fruit brandies.
