Mount Gay Distilleries Ltd is a Barbados-based subsidiary of the French multinational, Rémy Cointreau. It owns the Mount Gay distillery and several surrounding sugar estates, and manages the production and marketing of its historic eponymous rum brand.
The company was originally founded in 1926 by Aubrey Fitzosbert Ward and John Hutson and remained family-owned by the Wards until 1980 when they sold a 60% stake in the business to Foremost-McKesson subsidiary, "21" Brands Inc. McKesson then subsequently sold it to E. Rémy Martin & Cie in 1989. Notably, the company originally only owned the Mount Gay brand as the distillery was owned by a separate entity. This remained the case until 2014 when they were united for the first time by Rémy Cointreau.
