In 1962, just before Jamaica received its independence, several barrels of rum from the Appleton Estate were set aside to age with the edict that these rums were to be used to create a very special blend of 50-year-old rum that would celebrate the 50th anniversary of the historic event.
The barrels were placed in a special area in one of Appleton's ageing warehouses were carefully monitored, first by master blender, Owen Tulloch, and then by his protégé and successor, Joy Spence.
The oldest distillery in Jamaica and producer of the acclaimed Appleton Estate brand. It is located in the Saint Elizabeth parish and it has been in operation since 1749. Today the distillery is part of the Campari Group who acquired its parent company, J. Wray & Nephew, in 2012.

A historic rum company founded in 1825 in Kingston, Jamaica. As of 2012 it has been a subsidiary of the Italian multinational drinks company, Campari Group. The company owns two distilling operation in Jamaica, the Appleton Estate and the lesser-known New Yarmouth.
