Havana Club (PR)

Founded
1934
Production type
Modern Rum
Company

Havana Club Puerto Rican rum is the result of decades of complex legal disputes between the Arechebala family and the Cuban government. The Havana Club brand was first introduced in 1934 by José Arechabala SA, a company that was nationalised by Fidel Castro in 1960. The Arechebala family disputed the ownership of the Havana Club trademark however, which is recognised outside the US as being produced in Cuba by the state-owned Corporación Cuba Ron SA. In 1994, the Arechebalas sold their claim to the US trademark and their recipes to Bacardi Limited, who began marketing their own version there in 1996.

The Bacardi Limited version of Havana Club is produced at their Cataño distillery in Puerto Rico. Having been relaunched in the US market in 2016, its core range includes an Añejo Blanco and Añejo Clásico expression.

1994-present (US only)
