Chalong Bay is a rum distillery in Thailand, established in 2012 by Thibault Spithakis and Marine Lucchini.

Named after the bay on which it is located in Phuket, the distillery is based on the traditions of the French Caribbean and distils 100% of its rum from locally sourced, fresh sugarcane juice.

The first Chalong Bay rum was sold in September 2012, just a few months after the distillery commenced production.

All Chalong Bay rum is distilled from first-press organic sugarcane grown in Thailand and is all sold unaged. Its proprietary white rum is sold as part of the Pure Series, and its portfolio is rounded out by a range of botanically-infused versions called the Tropical Note Series, and a spiced rum called the Spiced Series.

History

The idea for Chalong Bay distillery was conceived by French entrepreneurs, Thibault Spithakis and Marine Lucchini. The former's grandfather had established a winery in France in the 1950s and the latter's family had worked in spirits distribution. Their combined experience saw them converge on the dream of bringing the distilling tradition of the French Caribbean to Thailand.

Together they founded Andaman Distillers Co with partners, Khun Dao, Khun Lek, and Khun Pang, and the Chalong Bay distillery was opened in 2012. It sold its first rum later that year.

The still used at Chalong Bay was imported from France and is what's known as an Armagnac still, which produces spirit using continuous first jet distillation. Seeking to emulate their native distilling traditions, the distillery produces a rhum agricole style spirit using a single variety of local Thai sugarcane, selected by Spithakis using his experience of wine grape cultivation and understanding of terroir.
