Laodi distillery is a craft rum producer located near Naxon on the southern border of the south-east Asian country of Laos. It is operated by Lao Agro Organic Industries Ltd and was founded in 2006 by Sihatta Rasphon and a Japanese contingent that included distiller, Ikuzo Iaoue.
The distillery produces pure cane juice rum, harvesting its own heirloom sugarcane variety, U-Thong III (or "red cheek"), from its surrounding 20-hectare estate. The fermented juice is then distilled in 1,500-litre stainless steel pot stills and Kabuto kettle stills, the latter manufactured in Laos with designs and permission from Japan's Oishi Sake Brewery.
The distillery markets white and brown rums under the Laodi brand name. In both instances the spirit is rested for two years prior to bottling. The original practice for the the brown rum was further aging for 1-2 years using imported French oak chips, however the distillery later began sourcing 50- and 200-litre barrels from Scotland and Kentucky.
Following a rebrand of the product label and bottle design in 2015, the Laodi range has also included various flavoured liqueurs called Mariage Rhum, and a a Japanese plum liqueur called Ume.
