The Matugga rum distillery is located in Livingston, Scotland and was founded by husband-and-wife team, Paul and Jacine Rutasikwa. The pair relocated to Scotland in 2017 so Paul could study brewing and distilling at Heriot-Watt University, and opened the distillery in 2018.
The distillery produces molasses rum from specially sourced East African sugarcane, employing wild fermentation and a pair of 200-litre copper pot stills.
The Matugga brand was first introduced by Matugga Distillers Ltd in 2015, produced using rum that they had contract-distilled for them at the English Spirit distillery in Great Yeldham, England. The rums were triple-distilled to the company's own specifications using specially sourced molasses from East Africa. Launched at the inaugural London Rum Experience Week in October 2015, the first expressions were a golden rum and a spiced rum.
Production was officially moved to the Matugga distillery when it opened in 2018, however at present its Matugga core range is still comprised of the same pair of expressions. The golden rum is ex-bourbon cask aged, while the spiced rum is flavoured with black tea, fresh ginger, spices and Scottish honey.
