Pure Single Cane Juice Rum

Mhoba is a South African rum distillery located near the town of Malalane in the Mpumalanga province. It was established by Robert Greaves, whose family has been growing sugarcane on their estate there since the 1980s. Following the economic crises of 2008, Robert realised alternative means were required to begin adding value to their product, and began experimenting with distilling cane spirits in 2013.

The distillery was granted its Micro Manufacturers Liquor License from the South African government in June 2015, opening commercially for the first time. It produces cane juice rums of pot stills that are hand-made by Robert Greaves, and bottles a variety of aged and unaged expressions.

The Mhoba brand was introduced to its domestic market in South Africa in 2015 with the release of its unaged white rum and its glass cask-aged rum, produced by suspending wood chips or staves within glass demijohns. Samples of the spirit were then demoed at rum festivals in 2016 and 2017, and by 2018 the brand had obtained international distribution.

The brand's initial expressions, Pot Distilled White Rum and Stave Aged Dark Rum, are referred to as The Original range and are still only available in South Africa. A swathe of expressions are bottled for the global market however, with a core range that includes various white rums, stave-aged rums and blends of the two called Strand 101 and Strand 151. The distillery also releases premium offerings in its Select Reserve range that include single batch and single cask releases, each of which is bottled using a laser-engraved bamboo label.
