A former Bacardi distillery opened in Spain in 1959 following the exile of the family from Cuba. The distillery served an important role in the growth of Bacardi as an international brand, however was forced to close in 1998 due to molasses supply issues.
A rum brand originally created in Cuba in 1862. The Bacardi company's assets were seized by Fidel Casto's government in 1960 and it has never returned to the island. Despite this, it has gone from strength to strength over its long history and is now the best-selling rum label in the world.
The Puerto Rico branch of the global Bacardi operation in the latter 20th century. Established in the 1930s, it opened the Cataño distillery in 1958 which is still the company's main production facility. The company was merged into the Bermuda-based parent operation, Bacardi Limited, in 1992
