Following the exile of the Bacardi family from Cuba in the late 1950s, the company founder, José 'Pepín' Bosch, sought to internationalise the company and opened new distilleries in Puerto Rico and Spain. The European site was seen as crucial to this goal and the distillery was built in Malaga, Spain in 1959.
The plant was used by the company for four decades before closing in 1998, with the discontinuation of molasses production in the city considered a key factor.
