Père Labat is a long-serving brand name used by the Poisson distillery in Marie-Galante, Guadeloupe to market its rum. The distillery was opened in 1916 by Paul Rameaux, and he registered the Père Labat name during the second world war, first distributing it in 1945. The name is derived from a 17th century Dominican friar who modernised sugar production methods throughout the French Caribbean. He was, however, also a slave owner. The brand name remains in use despite modern unease around such legacies.
Père Labat are traditional cane juice rums, produced on the distillery's Creole column still. Its current core range comprises rhum blanc at both 40% and 59% ABV, and an 8-year-old rhum vieux.
