The Bacardi distillery in The Bahamas was once one of the company's most important production sites. Opened in 1966, the distillery was located in Nassau on the southern coast of New Providence island and was originally opened in order to export their rum to Europe without incurring the large duty fees levied in Puerto Rico at the time. The company had already had a presence on the island for a decade, having transferred its assets there to insulate it from the political turbulence in Cuba in the 1950s.
In 2009 it was announced that the distillery would close and the company consolidated its production at its main distillery in Cataño again, citing changes in trade agreements and competition in the region as the reasons.
