Renaissance is a rum distillery located in the Kaohsiung City of Taiwan. It was founded by the Franco-Taiwanese couple, Olivier Caen and Linya Chiou, who started out in business together in 2006 by establishing a wine and spirits import company. Caen began experimenting with rum production on a 500-litre stainless steel pot still between 2013 and 2016, eventually determining it to be a viable business in 2017, opening the Renaissance distillery.
The distillery continues to use Caen's original pot still, however as of 2017 has also been equipped with a 1200-litre copper Charentais still. It produces single estate rums using a combination of cane juice and molasses produced on its 0.7-hectare sugar plantation.
The first casks of rum from Renaissance distillery were bottled in 2018, and were a selection of 2014 vintages produced in the early experimental years before the distillery was inaugurated under its current name. Due to the relatively low production capacity at the distillery, the Renaissance brand is generally limited to single cask and small batch releases.
Renaissance rums are typified by their impressive transparency in disclosing almost every detail of each cask's production process on the labels. This includes information about fermentation, cask provenance, maturation and distillation.
