Diamond SVW 1996 Velier 15 Year Old

Velier was founded by Casimir Chaix in Genoa in 1947 as a wine and spirits importer and distributor. By the 1980s they were still a small family-company with less than ten staff. This all changed in 1986 when it was purchased by Luca Gargano, a former brand ambassador for Saint James who was at the time still in his twenties. Under his direction, they selected their first single cask whiskies in 1992, and their first rum in 1996. In the decades that followed, Velier have gone on to become one of the most collectible brands in the industry, and Gargano has positioned them as the one of the foremost authorities and bottlers of rum anywhere in the world.

Velier's earliest Demerara releases were bottled in 1996, laying the groundwork for what would later become affectionately known as the \"Age of Velier's Demerara.\" This began in earnest in 2004, after Gargano was invited to the Demerara Distillers Ltd warehouses in Guyana to select tropically aged barrels to be bottled by Velier for the first time. The \"age\" only lasted until 2015, but has an enduring legacy of having indelibly raised the profile of the historic rum stills and marque's of Guyana, which have become some of the most sought after in the world, these Velier releases in particular.

This was distilled in the Diamond twin-column metal coffey still in 1996 and bottled 2011. The five SVW barrels #7080-84,  were hand selected by Luca Gargano.

Established around 1670, the Diamond Estate is home to the only remaining rum distillery in Guyana. Located on the east bank of the Demerara river, the distillery is operated by Demerara Distillers Ltd (DDL), the company created by the government in Guyana as it attempted to consolidate the nation’s rum production. This began in 1974 and culminated with the closure of Uitvlugt in 1999. Diamond blends its El Dorado brand using distillate from various combinations of its rum-producing stills, which include the pair of two-column English coffey stills installed there in the 1950s, and a rarely used high-ester John Dore pot still. These operate alongside the “Heritage Stills” acquired from Uitvlugt, which are Uitvlugt’s own historic four-column French Savalle stills, the Versailles and Port Mourant wooden pot stills, and the Enmore wooden coffey still, the oldest and last of its kind in the world.

The three SSN barrels - 8404, 8405 & 8407 - and were hand selected by Luca Gargano of Velier, and produced 828 bottles after 16 years of tropical ageing and a whopping angels' share of 75%.

Demerara Rum 1980 Moon Import Sherry Wood

This was produced during the early period of the nationalisation of the Guyana sugar trade by the country’s government, which saw it acquire a controlling stake in the country’s three remaining distilling companies. It managed these using a holding company called the Guyana Liquor Corporation, and its portfolio included the Diamond, Enmore, Uitvlugt and briefly, Versailles distilleries (they closed the latter in 1978). One of its first orders of business was to begin laying down stock with a view to bottlings its own brands, which it eventually did in 1992, launching its now iconic El Dorado 15 year old. In the meantime it continued distilling bulk rum for independent bottlers, resulting in a wealth of spectacular releases like this. These may contain single marque rums, or a blend of various marques from the country’s many historic stills, all of which are still in use today at Diamond, the sole remaining distillery. Known as the “heritage stills,” they are Uitvlugt’s historic four-column French Savalle stills, the Versailles and Port Mourant wooden pot stills, and the Enmore wooden coffey still, the oldest and last of its kind in the world.

This was distilled in 1980 and has been matured in sherry wood before being bottled in 2004 for Moon Import.

Moon Import was founded by Pepi Mongiardino in 1980. Although primarily concerned with the distribution and bottling of single malt, the company has released some spectacular rum as well. While the new owners of companies like Samaroli and Silver Seal have placed a greater emphasis on rum in 21st century, Mongiardino was an early advocate of the spirit, particularly Demerara rum and the Moon Import catalogue routinely featured a number of what are now very special bottles. Always beautifully labelled, Pepi is acclaimed for designing the packaging for Moon Import bottles himself, often using images found in old books. These iconic designs, coupled with the quality of the liquid saw Moon Import steadily grow in popularity, and they are now some of brightest gems in any collection.

Demerara Rum 1985 Rum Nation 23 Year Old Original Still

A demerara rum, distilled in 1985 and bottled in 2008 after 23 years in cask.

Founded in 1999 by Fabio Rossi CEO of Rossi & Rossi and modelled after his highly successful whisky bottling company Wilson & Morgan. Since it's inception Rum Nation has earned a good reputation for producing some excellent quality and value drinking rums, especially at the premium end of the spectrum.

This rum was distilled by Demerara Distillers Ltd, the company formed by the government in Guyana in 1983 after it consolidated all of its nationalised rum distillers as a single entity. It operated three distilleries; Diamond, Enmore and Uitvlugt, and was in the process of warehousing ageing stock with a view to bottling its own rum brands, which it eventually did in 1992, launching its now iconic El Dorado 15 year old. Dictador 1978 2 Masters / Leclerc Briant

The Destilería Colombiana was established in 1913 by Don Julio Arango y Parra and today it is still run by members of his family. The distillery’s flagship brand, Dictador, is named after Severo Arango y Ferro, nicknamed \"El Dictador,\" for the heavy hand with which oversaw trade between Spain and its colonies in the 18th century. Don Julio was one of his descendants. The distillery operates both copper pot stills as well as a stainless steel six-column continuous still, and uses a wash made from sugarcane “honey.” This is the product of the first stage in molasses production, which produces a syrup by boiling off the water from freshly pressed cane juice. This provides a lighter distillate than traditional molasses.

The 2 Masters series is a range of rums that pairs the wisdom of Dictador master blender, Hernan Parra, with another from the world of wine and spirits.

This example was co-creatd with Herve Jestin, master champagne maker at Leclerc Briant.

Samaroli is perhaps Italy's most revered independent bottler of Scotch whisky. With an impeccable taste in single cask whiskies, and an eye for aesthetics (if not English spelling at times!), he is regarded by many as a visionary. Many of his bottles now occupy deserved sports on the pantheon of whisky greats, and their rum output under the tenure of Antonio Bleve is increasingly revered as well.

This is one of 346 bottles from barrel #33, bottled in June 2006.

One of the big players of the Rum world and a well established luxury brand, Dictador is still shrouded in mystery. Perhaps owing to a misalignment of expectations these Best of bottlings are a the subject of a lot of spilt digital ink. Consensus seems to be that the vintage and any age statement refer to the Solera they are drawn from and that the liquid also includes some younger spirit from more recent vintages, rather than being a pure single vintage. Regardless of the exact make up of the liquid, Dictador is none the less an incredibly popular brand and this is one of their premium expressions, a great chance to see what Destileria Colombiana is all about.

Don Pancho 1996 Sansibar 21 Year Old

A single cask rum from the Las Cabras in Panama, bottled by Sansibar at 21 years of age.

The Las Cabras distillery was originally established as a sugar mill back in 1919. Having settled in Panama 1993, the old warehouse was discovered by Francisco “Don Pancho” Fernandez in the mid-1990s, including an old copper column still built by Copper & Brass Works of Cincinnati in 1922. Don Pancho had a lifetime of experience in rum production as one of the leaders of the Cuban rum industry under Fidel Castro’s government, earning him the nickname, the Great Grandfather of Havana Club. Don Pancho left Cuba when Cubaron sold the distribution rights for Havana Club to Pernod-Ricard, and partnering with his friend, Carlos Esquivel, decided to rebuild the Las Cabras distillery. The 1922 Copper & Brass is now the final column in a five-column continuous still set.

Sansibar Whisky is a German independent bottler, specialising in Scotch, Japanese whisky and rum. Founded by connoisseur, Jens Drewitz, he tastes and hand-selects almost every cask he purchases, on site at the distilleries. An impressive eye for quality, Sansibar have also supported other small independents, acting as the exclusive German distributor for Glasgow's North Star, and Hidden Spirits in Italy.

Demerara Rum 1998 Samaroli Single Cask #63

This rum was distilled by Demerara Distillers Ltd, the company formed by the government in Guyana in 1983 after it consolidated all of its nationalised rum distillers as a single entity. Their long-term goal was also to refine operations to a single distillery, and had already closed Enmore in 1994. Diamond and Uitvlugt were still in use but the latter was to follow in 1999. Its aim of launching its own rum brand was complete however, with the release of the iconic El Dorado 15 year old in 1992. While provision of this was a key focus, DDL continued distilling bulk rum for independent bottlers, resulting in a wealth of spectacular releases like this. These may contain single marque rums, or a blend of various marques from the country’s many historic stills, all of which are still in use today having been moved to Diamond to join its traditional two-column metal coffeys. Known as the “heritage stills,” they are Uitvlugt’s historic four-column French Savalle stills, the Versailles and Port Mourant wooden pot stills, and the Enmore wooden coffey still, the oldest and last of its kind in the world.

A 1998 vintage, this was bottled in 2017 from cask #63 and one of 300 bottles.

Depaz 2004 Single Cask #3372

The Depaz estate was established back in 1651, but its modern history begins in 1917 when Victor Depaz returned to the area to rebuild it following the eruption of Mount Pelée in 1902, which had devastated the area. The first to do so, Victor was ridiculed at the time, but his faith was rewarded when it transpired that the difficult but sought-after Blue Cane was particularly well-suited to the fertile volcanic soil that had been left behind. This highly flavoursome sugarcane turned Depaz into one of the most revered rum producers on the island. When Victor died, his son Andre took over, partnering with long-term customers, Bardinet, producers of the Negrita and Old Nick brands. Bardinet was bought by La Martinquaise in 1993. Depaz is produced on the distillery’s two stainless steel column stills, however the copper column still from Dillon is also in operation there as of 2005.

This rhum vieux agricole was distilled from pure sugar cane juice on the distillery's column stills, and is a single 2004 vintage cask, bottled at its natural strength.

A 2003 vintage Demerara dark rum, this was bottled in 2018 and is of 300 from cask #6.

This rum was distilled at Diamond by Demerara Distillers Ltd, the company formed by the government in Guyana in 1983 after it consolidated all of its nationalised rum distillers as a single entity, using a single distillery. Established around 1670, the Diamond Estate is the only remaining rum distiller in Guyana. <SV>PM is comprised of two experimental barrels containing rum from the Diamond metal coffey still and the wooden double pot still from Port Mourant.

Don Pancho 1992 Sansibar 25 Year Old

Diamond 2005 Rum Nation Small Batch 2017

Rum Nation was founded in 1999 by Fabio Rossi, CEO of Rossi & Rossi and modelled after his highly successful whisky bottling company, Wilson & Morgan. Since its inception it has earned a good reputation for producing some excellent quality and value drinking rums, especially at the premium end of the spectrum.

This was distilled on the traditional two-column stills at Diamond in 2005. It was bottled in 2017 as part of the Small Batch Rare Rums series.

Established around 1670, the Diamond Estate is the only remaining rum distiller in Guyana. Located on the east bank of the Demerara river, the distillery is operated by Demerara Distillers Ltd (DDL), the company created by the government in Guyana as it attempted to consolidate the nation’s rum production. This began in 1974 and culminated with the closure of Uitvlugt in 1999. Diamond blends its El Dorado brand using distillate from various combinations of its rum-producing stills, which include the pair of two-column English coffey stills, installed there in the 1950s and a rarely used high-ester John Dore pot still. El Dorado was launched in 1992, but the distillery has continued its historic practice of providing barrels to independent bottlers, resulting is a wealth of impressive releases like this.
