Port Mourant PM 1975 Velier 33 Year Old

Velier was founded by Casimir Chaix in Genoa in 1947 as a wine and spirits importer and distributor. By the 1980s they were still a small family-company with less than ten staff. This all changed in 1986 when it was purchased by Luca Gargano, a former brand ambassador for Saint James who was at the time still in his twenties. Under his direction, they selected their first single cask whiskies in 1992, and their first rum in 1996. In the decades that followed, Velier have gone on to become one of the most collectible brands in the industry, and Gargano has positioned them as the one of the foremost authorities and bottlers of rum anywhere in the world.

Velier's earliest Demerara releases were bottled in 1996, laying the groundwork for what would later become affectionately known as the \"Age of Velier's Demerara.\" This began in earnest in 2004, after Gargano was invited to the Demerara Distillers Ltd warehouses in Guyana to select tropically aged barrels to be bottled and officially distributed by Velier for the first time. The \"age\" only lasted until 2015, but has an enduring legacy of having indelibly raised the profile of the historic rum stills and marque's of Guyana, which have become some of the most sought after in the world, these Velier releases in particular.

Distilled in 1975 at Uitvlugt, these casks, marked PM, were selected by Luca Gargano of Velier in March 2008 after a whopping 33 years of continental ageing.

Uitvlugt, pronounced [eye-flut] was located on the west bank of the Demerara river near the Dutch-established town of the same name. The distillery was established at the end of the 18th century and remained Dutch-owned until the government in Guyana began to nationalise and consolidate the country’s rum production in 1974. Thereafter it became part of the portfolio of Demerara Distillers Ltd (DDL), who closed it down at the end of 1999. Uitvlugt originally operated double wooden pot stills, however these were replaced by a four column French Savalle still in the early 1920s. A double wooden pot still was reinstalled in the 1950s however, moved there from the closed Port Mourant distillery. That still produced this rum. It is constructed from Greenheart wood, which is native to Guyana and is mostly used in boat-building due to its ability to remain strong while constantly wet. The wood is also well suited to distilling, stripping spirit of sulphites in the same manner that copper does. The Port Mourant and the Versailles single wooden pot still are the last of their kind still in operation. The Port Mourant still is so-called as it started life at the distillery of the same name, established in 1732. Its configuration produces a typically heavy bodied and oily distillate, generally credited with being one of the key components in the old Royal Navy blend. Port Mourant rums remain high in demand to this day, and the still remains in operation at Diamond, the last remaining distillery in the country.

Port Mourant 1999 Plantation 18 Year Old Extreme No.2

Launched in 2003, Plantation Rum is a brand owned by the well-established cognac producer, Cognac Ferrand. Established in 1989, Maison Ferrand has used its extensive contacts in the spirits industry to source some exceptional casks of rum. The company also has privileged access to those in the warehouses of Clarendon and Long Pond in Jamaica, through its acquisition of the West India Rum Distillery (WIRD) and the shares in National Rums of Jamaica that came with it. Its ownership of the Bajan WIRD distillery has seen it increasingly involved in rum production as well as bottling in recent years. In June 2020 it was announced that Plantation Rum would be changing its name to support the global dialogue around racial equality, with the company accepting the hurtful connotations that the word “plantation” can evoke.

This is part of the second batch of the company's dosage-free Extreme series, bottled in 2017. An 18 year old, this was distilled on the Port Mourant still at Uitvlugt in 1999.  Maison Ferrand often use their barrels to finished these rums. This has spent 15 years in a bourbon cask in the tropics, and a further 3 ageing in Ferrand ex-Cognac wood in France.

Established around 1670, the Diamond Estate is the only remaining rum distiller in Guyana. Port Mourant 2001 High Spirits 20 Year Old

High Spirits are the second bottling company started by Nadi Fiori, co-founder of the acclaimed Intertrade. Like many of his contemporaries, his bottlings are known for their artistic labels. In 2008 High Spirits bottled a series for the renowned collector, Valentino Zagatti to celebrate his 50th year of buying whisky. These and many of the earlier High Spirits releases are highly collectible.

This was distilled on the traditional two-column stills at Diamond in 2001. It was bottled in 2001 as part of the Why not Toucans? range.

Established around 1670, the Diamond Estate is the only remaining rum distiller in Guyana. Located on the east bank of the Demerara river, the distillery is operated by Demerara Distillers Ltd (DDL), the company created by the government in Guyana as it attempted to consolidate the nation’s rum production. This began in 1974 and culminated with the closure of Uitvlugt in 1999. Diamond blends its El Dorado brand using distillate from various combinations of its rum-producing stills, which include the pair of two-column English coffey stills, installed there in the 1950s and a rarely used high-ester John Dore pot still. These operate alongside the “Heritage Stills” acquired from Uitvlugt, which are Uitvlugt’s own historic four-column French Savalle stills, the Versailles and Port Mourant wooden pot stills, and the Enmore wooden coffey still, the oldest and last of its kind in the world. El Dorado was launched in 1992, but the distillery has continued its historic practice of providing barrels to independent bottlers, resulting is a wealth of impressive releases like this.

Providence 2020 Habitation Velier 4 Year Old

Distillerie de Port-au-Prince was established in 2018 as a collaboration between La Maison & Velier and Herbert Barbancourt-Linge Jr. - Master Distiller and descendant of Labbé Barbancourt, who co-founded the famed Barbancourt distillery with his brother. Distillery Port-au-Prince resurrects and preserves the traditional style of rum produced at Barbancourt until 1992 when production shifted to column distillate. Running a steam heated Muller copper pot still with a 6 plate column attached designed to the technical specifications of Vittorio 'Gianni' Capovilla, the first spirits were drawn in November 2019.

Velier was founded by Casimir Chaix in Genoa in 1947 as a wine and spirits importer and distributor. By the 1980s they were still a small family-company with less than ten staff. In the decades that followed, Velier have gone on to become one of the most collectible brands in the industry, and Gargano has positioned them as the one of the foremost authorities and bottlers of rum anywhere in the world.

More than just a bottler of rum, Luca Gargano is considered a visionary in the cane spirits industry, even developing his own classification for different styles of rum in 2015. Many distilleries have since adopted this. Among the classifications is \"pure single rum,\" which denotes a spirit produced on pot stills at a single distillery. This Habitation Velier range is a celebration of these rums \"which best expresses the raw material and the know-how of the distiller.\"

This was distilled in 2020 and aged in the tropics for 4 years before being bottled by Velier in 2024.

This and the Villa Paradisetto commemorative in 2020 were the first Velier bottlings from the well-respected Privateer. Aged in American oak cask, this is a vatting of two 2016 and three 2017 barrels, aged and bottled in Ipswich, MA.

Privateer was founded in 2011 by Andrew Cabot, and the distillery is located in Boston, Massachusetts. Under the guidance of master distiller, Maggie Campbell, the distillery has true emphasis on craft production. It uses only Grade A (also known as “Fancy”) US molasses, and for its white rum single origin molasses from one valley in Guatemala. The rum is double distilled, first in a thousand-gallon Vendome pot, then in a copper eau-de-vie still, a hybrid pot/column still with an adjustable plate configuration. It is then bottled in accordance with the Bottled in Bond Act of 1897, which was intended for American whiskey, but ensures the spirit blended is from one distillery and produced in a single distilling season. This transparent approach has won Privateer a loyal following of connoisseurs and collectors alike among its fans.

The Royal Navy had a history of issuing its sailors rations of rum which can be dated back as far back as 1655. On 31st July 1970, this tradition came to an end and became forever known as Black Tot Day. Nine years later, Charles Tobias obtained the rights to the original Admiralty recipe to recreate it. He named his brand Pusser’s (Royal Navy slang for a ship’s supply officer) and is still being sold today.

Bidding advice

You can place bids either under the lot image on the main auction page or on the right side of the individual lot page.

Placing a Maximum Bid
Use the "Set your bid limit" button on the left side of the bidding panel to enter the highest amount you're willing to bid on a lot. Our system will then automatically raise your bid in set increments if you’re outbid, up to your maximum. If someone bids above your set limit, we’ll notify you by email so you can choose whether to increase your bid.

Placing a Single Bid
Alternatively, place a single bid by selecting the button on the right side of the bidding panel. The button displays the amount needed for the next increment. For example, if the current highest bid is £50.00, the button will show "+ £55.00" (reflecting a £5.00 increment).

Incremental Bidding Explained
Our system increases bids based on preset increments, as shown in the table below, whether you set a maximum bid or make a single bid.
