Cointreau & Cie SA was a French spirits company established in 1849 by the brothers, Adolphe and Edouard-Jean Cointreau. It was best known for its eponymous triple sec liqueur which it launched in 1875, the success of which enabled it to diversify over the following century. The company entered the rum distilling business in 1973 through its acquisition of Picon, which at the time owned the Saint James distillery and brand.
The company was eventually merged with E. Rémy Martin & Cie in 1990 to form the Rémy Cointreau group.
