Habitation Clément
The Habitation Clément distillery is the historic home of the Martinique rhum agricole brand, Clément. It was originally known as Domaine de l'Acajou and was opened in 1917 by Homère Clément in order to fulfil the need for alcohol production by the French government during the first world war.
The distillery's Clément brand was launched in 1940 and the operation remained family-owned until 1986 when it was acquired by Groupe Bernard Hayot (GBH). The company then shut it down and moved its stills to Simon where they produced Clément rum for many years, before the supply was switched to GBH's Fonds-Préville distillery. Habitation Clément remains the ageing facility and brand home however, and has been repurposed as a visitor centre and art gallery.
