The rum distillery at Hacienda Santa Teresa has been operational since 1896, however the estate itself traces it history back to 1796 when it was established by the Count Martín Tovar y Ponte. It was acquired by Gustavo Julio Vollmer Ribas in 1885, who imported the first stills from Germany and France eleven years later.
Distillation today takes place on both pot stills and a multi-column still, using a wash of molasses made from sugarcane on the Santa Teresa estate. The two distillates are blended before ageing in American and French oak.
Ron Santa Teresa became only the third official trademark in Venezuela when it was registered in 1909. Commercial production of rum had began in the decade prior but despite this long history of distilling, it had exported very little of its product until the end of the 20th century.
Santa Teresa became a global brand following its bicentenary in 1996, launching an expression known then as Selecto. A solera-aged blend of pot- and column-distilled rums, it is today known as the 1796 and the brand is managed in export markets for CA Ron Santa Teresa by Bacardi Limited.
