Port Mourant 1974 Kingsbury 44 Year Old

Kingsbury are Japan's most sought after independent bottler. They were founded in 1989 by Eaglesome, the high-end deli in Campbeltown that was purchased by J & A Mitchell & Co of Springbank distillery, and turned into one of the region's finest whisky merchants. They initially bottled Kingsbury's exclusively for the Japanese market, before the label was acquired by native firm, the Japanese Import System. They have released a number of some of the most collectible whiskies, including some classic vintages from Bowmore, and two dark sherry casked Ardbeg.

This Demerara rum was aged an incredible 44 years and bottled from single cask #1572. It was distilled on the Port Mourant still at Uitvlugt in 1974. One of just 150 bottles.

Uitvlugt, pronounced [eye-flut] was located on the west bank of the Demerara river near the Dutch-established town of the same name. The distillery was established at the end of the 18th century and remained Dutch-owned until the government in Guyana began to nationalise and consolidate the country’s rum production in 1974. Thereafter it became part of the portfolio of Demerara Distillers Ltd (DDL), who closed it down at the end of 1999. Uitvlugt originally operated double wooden pot stills, however these were replaced by a four column French Savalle still in the early 1920s. A double wooden pot still was reinstalled in the 1950s however, moved there from the closed Port Mourant distillery. That still produced this rum. It is constructed from Greenheart wood, which is native to Guyana and is mostly used in boat-building due to its ability to remain strong while constantly wet. The wood is also well suited to distilling, stripping spirit of sulphites in the same manner that copper does. The Port Mourant and the Versailles single wooden pot still are the last of their kind still in operation. The Port Mourant still is so-called as it started life at the distillery of the same name, established in 1732. Its configuration produces a typically heavy bodied and oily distillate, generally credited with being one of the key components in the old Royal Navy blend. Port Mourant rums remain high in demand to this day, and the still remains in operation at Diamond, the last remaining distillery in the country.

Port Mourant 1982 Velier

Velier was founded in Genoa in 1947 as a wine and spirits importer and distributor. They selected their first single cask whiskies in 1992, bottled for them by Signatory Vintage, and have gone on to become one of the most collectible brands in the industry. Luca Gargano's involvement with the company has also positioned them as the one of the foremost authorities and bottlers of collectible rum as well.

A very elegantly bottled 'Port Morant' rum, distilled in 1985. The Port Mourant distillery in Guyana stopped production in the 1950s, with its double wooden pot still moved to Uitvlugt who continued to produce rum in the same style. Uitvlugt is now also closed, but the Port Mourant still lives on to this day, in use at Guyana's only remaining distillery, Diamond.

Unlike other independent bottlers of the time (and some previous Velier bottlings) this was exclusively matured and bottled in Guyana, and was one of the bottles to set the precedent that Velier has become know for.

Port Mourant 2001 Precious Liquors 22 Year Old / 100 Aspects of the Moon #2

Established around 1670, the Diamond Estate is the only remaining rum distiller in Guyana. Located on the east bank of the Demerara river, the distillery is operated by Demerara Distillers Ltd (DDL), the company created by the government in Guyana as it attempted to consolidate the nation’s rum production. This began in 1974 and culminated with the closure of Uitvlugt in 1999, which saw Guyana’s “Heritage Stills” moved from there to Diamond. This was distilled on the Port Mourant double wooden pot still. It is constructed from Greenheart wood, which is native to Guyana and is mostly used in boat-building due to its ability to remain strong while constantly wet. Port Mourant 1993 Plantation 27 Year Old Extreme No.4 / The Nectar

Launched in 2003, Plantation Rum is a brand owned by the well-established cognac producer, Cognac Ferrand. Established in 1989, Maison Ferrand has used its extensive contacts in the spirits industry to source some exceptional casks of rum. The company also has privileged access to those in the warehouses of Clarendon and Long Pond in Jamaica, through its acquisition of the West India Rum Distillery (WIRD) and the shares in National Rums of Jamaica that came with it. Its ownership of the Bajan WIRD distillery has seen it increasingly involved in rum production as well as bottling in recent years. In June 2020 it was announced that Plantation Rum would be changing its name to support the global dialogue around racial equality, with the company accepting the hurtful connotations that the word “plantation” can evoke.

This Port Mourant rum was distilled at Uitvlugt in 1993 and bottled as part of the company's fourth dosage-free Extreme series. This one exclusive to The Nectar in Belgium.

Uitvlugt, pronounced [eye-flut] was located on the west bank of the Demerara river near the Dutch-established town of the same name. Poisson Pere Labat 2010 Velier Rhum Vieux / 70th Anniversary

The origins of the Poisson distillery trace back to 1863 when Catherine Poisson decided to open a sugar factory on the estate which she had purchased a few years prior. The profitability of sugar dwindled towards the end of the century though, and the estate was sold to Edoard Rameaux, who promptly acquired a Creole column still and built the Poisson distillery. He named his rum after Jean-Baptiste Labat, a 17th century French clergyman known as Pere Labat, well-remembered on Guadeloupe for introducing pioneering methods in sugar production. Poisson is the smallest of the producers on the Marie Galante island of the Guadeloupe archipelago, producing agricole rum on its over 100 year old copper column still in small and increasingly sought after batches.

Distilled in 2010, this Pere Labat rum and was bottled in February 2017 from casks #105 and #106 by Velier in celebration of their 70th anniversary.

Velier was founded by Casimir Chaix in Genoa in 1947 as a wine and spirits importer and distributor. By the 1980s they were still a small family-company with less than ten staff. This all changed in 1986 when it was purchased by Luca Gargano, a former brand ambassador for Saint James who was at the time still in his twenties. Under his direction, they selected their first single cask whiskies in 1992, and their first rum in 1996. In the decades that followed, Velier have gone on to become one of the most collectible brands in the industry, and Gargano has positioned them as the one of the foremost authorities and bottlers of rum anywhere in the world.

Demerara Pot Still Rum 1992 Bloomsbury ex-Laphroaig Sherry Cask

This rum was distilled by Demerara Distillers Ltd, the company formed by the government in Guyana in 1983 after it consolidated all of its nationalised rum distillers as a single entity. It operated three distilleries; Diamond, Enmore and Uitvlugt, and was in the process of warehousing ageing stock with a view to bottling its own rum brands, which it eventually did in 1992, launching its now iconic El Dorado 15 year old. In the meantime it continued distilling bulk rum for independent bottlers, resulting in a wealth of spectacular releases like this. This may contain single marque rums, or a blend of various marques from the country’s historic pot stills, both of which are still in use today at Diamond, the sole remaining distillery. Known as the “heritage stills,” they are the Versailles and Port Mourant single and double (respectively) wooden pot stills, located at this time at Enmore and Uitvlugt.

A 1992 vintage Demerara rum from Guyana. It was matured in an ex-Laphroaig sherry cask and bottled by Bloomsbury.

Port Mourant PM 1997 El Dorado 20 Year Old

The El Dorado range was introudced by Demerara Distillers Ltd in 1992 with the lauch its now classic 15 year old. The close working relationship between DDL and Luca Gargano’s Velier in the 2000s significantly raised the profile of their Diamond distillery’s various historic stills, prompting them to introduce this premium El Dorado Rare Collection range in 2016. The range showcases small batch bottlings of its various cask marques, much as the esteemed Italian distributors had done in the decade prior.

This is a PM marque produced on the Port Mourant still during its time at Uitvlugt.

Pusser's 15 Year Old Trafalgar Bicentennial Decanter 2005 1 Litre

\"England expects that every man will do his duty\" - Horatio Nelson

The Royal Navy had a history of issuing its sailors rations of rum which can be dated back as far back as 1655. On 31st July 1970, this tradition came to an end and became forever known as Black Tot Day. Nine years later, Charles Tobias obtained the rights to the original Admiralty recipe to recreate it. He named his brand Pusser’s (Royal Navy slang for a ship’s supply officer) and is still being sold today.

This 2005 decanter commemorates the 200th anniversary of the battle of Trafalgar.

Masam are an independent bottling company run by Maryse Accorsi Samaroli, the wife of the legendary Silvano Samaroli. These were initially supervised by the man himself, but since his death in 2017, the tradition has been lovingly continued by his wife.

Its configuration produces a typically heavy bodied and oily distillate, generally credited with being one of the key components in the old Royal Navy blend. Port Mourant rums remain high in demand to this day, and the still remains in operation at Diamond, the last remaining distillery in the country.

Privateer 2017 Velier 3 Year Old / Warren Khong Villa Paradisetto

This Rum was bottled in 2020 by Velier to commemorate their 32nd and final year at their offices in Villa Paradisetto. This is one of six exclusive releases, each featuring a specially commissioned label by long-time collaborator, Warren Khong.

Privateer was founded in 2011 by Andrew Cabot, and the distillery is located in Boston, Massachusetts. Under the guidance of master distiller, Maggie Campbell, the distillery has true emphasis on craft production. It uses only Grade A (also known as “Fancy”) US molasses, and for its white rum single origin molasses from one valley in Guatemala. The rum is double distilled, first in a thousand-gallon Vendome pot, then in a copper eau-de-vie still, a hybrid pot/column still with an adjustable plate configuration. It is then bottled in accordance with the Bottled in Bond Act of 1897, which was intended for American whiskey, but ensures the spirit blended is from one distillery and produced in a single distilling season. This transparent approach has won Privateer a loyal following of connoisseurs and collectors alike among its fans.

Panama Rum 14 Year Old Blackadder Raw Cask

Blackadder International were founded in 1995 by whisky writers, Robin Tucek and John Lamond, authors of the 1987 publication, The Malt Whisky File: The Essential Guide for the Malt Whisky Connoisseur. The company has gained great affection from whisky enthusiasts for its Raw Cask series, which is deliberately drawn un-filtered from the cask so as to retain all cask sediment along with any natural oils and fats. The company is credited with a key role in the popularisation of cask strength whiskies since its inception.

This was aged for 14 years in cask #BR21-06. It was then bottled in July 2021 by Blackadder.

Bidding advice

You can place bids either under the lot image on the main auction page or on the right side of the individual lot page.

Placing a Maximum Bid
Use the "Set your bid limit" button on the left side of the bidding panel to enter the highest amount you're willing to bid on a lot. Our system will then automatically raise your bid in set increments if you’re outbid, up to your maximum. If someone bids above your set limit, we’ll notify you by email so you can choose whether to increase your bid.

Placing a Single Bid
Alternatively, place a single bid by selecting the button on the right side of the bidding panel. The button displays the amount needed for the next increment. For example, if the current highest bid is £50.00, the button will show "+ £5.00" (reflecting a £5.00 increment).
