Angostura is a historic rum brand produced by Angostura Ltd in Trinidad. The brand is best-known for its aromatic bitters however, produced from a recipe devised by Dr. Johann Siegert in 1824 and first marketed as Angostura in 1830. It is named after the Venezuelan town (now called Ciudad Bolívar) where Siegert was stationed as the Surgeon General in Simón Bolívar's army.
Angostura bitters was produced by the company using rum produced by other distillers on Trinidad. As a result, the company eventually started to age and bottle it as well. It eventually opened its own distillery in 1949, Trinidad Distillers Ltd, where Angostura rums are distilled from molasses today. The current core range is comprised of several white rums, a 5- and 7-year-old age statement, and premium expressions called 1787, 1824 and 1919.
