Havana Club is the best-selling Cuban rum brand and one of the best-known of those produced throughout the Caribbean. It was introduced in 1934 by José Arechabala SA, however was nationalised by the Cuban government in 1960. Today it is co-owned by the state-funded Corporación Cuba Ron (Cubaron) and French multinational, Pernod Ricard, through a subsidiary company called Havana Club International SA. It should be noted that a competing version of the label exists in the United States however, produced in Puerto Rico by Bacardi Limited following a deal struck with the exiled Arechebala family in 1994.
Although Cubaron own the brand's original production home in Cárdenas, it is today produced at their distilleries in Santa Cruz and San José. Its core range currently comprises the classic Original 3-year-old, Especial and 7-year-old. These are supported by premium expressions such as Selección de Maestros and the 15-year-old Gran Reserve, as well as regular limited editions.
