Hampden is a historic sugar estate and distillery that traces its history back to 1753. It was founded by a Scotsman called Archibald Sterling, in the Queen of Spain valley of Jamaica’s Trelawny parish. Having been nationalised in 2003, the Jamaican government divested Hampden Estate to the Hussey family's Everglades Farms Ltd in 2009.
The distillery is famous for its high-ester pot still rums, produced using extended fermentation with wild yeasts. It currently has four pot stills: two from Forsyths in Scotland, one from Vendome in Kentucky, and another from T&T Engineering in South Africa.
The Hampden Estate brand was launched in Jamaica by Everglades Farms in 2010 with the introduction of a white rum expression called Rum Fire. This was joined in 2012 by Rum Fire Velvet and a premium offering called Hampden Estate Gold.
In 2018 the company reached an agreement with La Maison & Velier to begin distributing a refreshed Hampden Estate brand to key global export markets. The European company also assisted with bottling many of the releases, with only Rum Fire and the annual Great House limited edition bottled at the distillery. With the goal of ensuring all official Hampden Estate releases are bottled in Jamaica, Everglades Farms invested in new warehousing and a bottling hall at the end of 2022.
The current Hampden Estate core range still includes Rum Fire, which is joined by an 8-year-old, an overproof release of its HLCF mark and the sherry-matured Pagos. These are supported by regular single casks and other limited editions.
