Diplomático is a brand of Venezuelan rum that is owned and marketed by the Brown-Foreman Corporation in the US. It was introduced in 1989 and is named after Don Juan Nieto Meléndez (aka Don Juancho), whose portrait appears on its labels. Its original ownership were one of the partis that came together to acquire Licorerías Unidas SA (LUSA) from Diageo in 2002, forming a new entity called Destilerías Unidas (SA).
Although now American-owned, the brand is still produced at DUSA on its variety of still types, which include pot still, a batch kettle and a Barbet column still. Its core range comprises its Reserva Exclusiva, Selección de Familia, Mantuano and a white rum called Planas. These are supported by various single vintage and single still limited editions. In Germany the brand has been labelled as Botucal since 2012 following a trademark dispute with Aldi, who claimed it infringed upon their Diplomat brandy trademark.
Diplomático brand is introduced to the domestic rum market in Venezuela.
The brand's owners become one of the founders of Destilerías Unidas SA, acquiring the LUSA distillery in La Miel from Diageo.
