Beenleigh is the oldest registered distillery in Australia, and as of 2012 has been owned by Vok Beverages, the drinks division of the Bickford's Group. The distillery was originally established in 1884 as the legal successor to the SS Walrus, a floating moonshine still that was sailed between sugarcane plantations to avoid the local police.
Today the distillery produces double-distilled rum from local molasses, first distilling its wash in its column still before re-distilling the heart of the spirit in its historic copper vat still. Its flagship brand is the eponymous Beenleigh label, and it also produces Inner Circle rum.
Rum from the distillery has been bottled under the Beenleigh name since the mid-20th century and the brand actually outsold its Australian rival, Bundaberg, in the the 1960s and 1970s. During this period its range included a 5-year-old and non-age statement release, including an overproof offering.
A series of acquisitions over the following decades brought Beenleigh into the hands of Tarac Technologies, who in 2004 sold the distillery and brand to different parties. The latter was sold to Vok Beverages who reunited it with the distillery again in 2012. They then relaunched the Beenleigh brand the following year before refreshing its image again in 2015, now referring to it as Beenleigh Artisan Distillers on the label. Its current core range includes a 3-year-old white rum, 2-year-old Copper Pot Distilled and 5-year-old Double Cask, both aged in bourbon and ex-brandy barrels.
