Trois Rivières was a distillery located within the sugar plantation of the same name, which was established in 1660 by Nicolas Fouquet and takes its name from the nearby Oman, Bois d’Inde and Saint Pierre rivers. The distillery was not constructed until 1785 however, and remained mostly unused until its modernisation by Amédée Aubéry in 1905, who eventually halted its sugar production in favour of rum. It was his son who then made the decision to switch from molasses to sugarcane juice for production in 1940.

The distillery was acquired by Bellonnie & Bourdillon Successeurs group in 1994, who eventually opted to close the distillery down in 2003 and move production of the Trois Rivières brand to La Mauny.

Trois Rivières rum has been produced for for over 100 years, however only in its current form as a rhum agricole since 1940. It is today one of the brands produced that adheres to the strict guidelines of the Martinique AOC, a classification that Jean-Pierre Bourdillon of the BBS group had successfully campaigned for in 1996. The Trois Rivières brand was introduced to export markets in 1980, having been revived five years earlier from a dormant period when Duquesne was the preferred brand name of its ownership.

Since then, the brand has developed a reputation for quality and its portfolio is notable for including a number of vintage expressions alongside its proprietary output over the years. Nowadays owned by the Campari Group, the brand had huge distribution and a similarly sprawling core range. These are divided between white and ambré rums, aged and vintage rums and its Bar Editions range.
