Long Pond

Long Pond is a historic rum distillery in Jamaica, established in the Trelawny parish in 1753 along with a sugar factory. It grew exponentially over the next two centuries as it swallowed up neighbouring estates and was eventually acquired by the Seagram Company in 1953 in order to secure the chain of supply for its Captain Morgan brand, introduced nine years previously. It was later nationalised by the government in 1977 and is today part of the National Rums of Jamaica (NRJ) portfolio along with Clarendon and the Innswood ageing facility. The Long Pond sugar factory however, is separately owned by Everglades Farms.
The distillery has had a turbulent recent history and was closed between 2012 and 2017 due to environmental concerns, and again in 2018 following a fire. It was then extensively rebuilt, re-opening in 2022. The distillery produces molasses rums on a combination of stills that include Vendome and John Dore pot stills and Blairs column stills.
Throughout its history, the various ownerships of Long Pond distillery has resulted in it primarily providing bulk rum to blenders and it was never officially marketed under its own name until the 21st century. Despite being in the midst of its second period of closure in the space of just ten years, the first Long Pond branded rum was introduced by National Rums of Jamaica (NRJ) in 2021, the inaugural release in its Rare Cask series. A single mark rum of the distillery ITP variety, it was distilled on the John Dore pot still and aged 15 years. A follow-up 320-bottle release of its VRW mark, again distilled on the John Dore pot still in 2003 was released later that year.
Despite its long overdue introduction, releases of the Long Pond brand remain rare. Other distillery bottlings also exist in the form of an NRJ collaboration with La Maison & Velier, which are released semi-regularly alongside examples of Monymusk rums as well.
